Deconstruction and Salvage Services

Material from the construction, demolition, and renovation of buildings makes up one-third of our region’s waste. The Demolition Waste Reduction Bylaw diverts this waste from landfills, reducing resource consumption, emissions, and supporting a shift towards a more circular economy.

Deconstruction Requirements

The wood salvage requirement for the demolition of pre-1950 single-family homes is 3.5 kg or 2.6 board feet of lumber per square foot of finished floor space for reuse. Another option is to relocate the house for use at another location.

How to Comply

  • Submit a one-page wood salvage plan with your demolition application for single-family homes built before 1950.
  • Pay a non-refundable $250 administration fee.
  • Provide a $15,000 waste diversion security deposit, refundable based on the amount of salvaged wood.

After deconstruction, submit the wood salvage compliance report, original receipts, weight bills, and other supporting materials to building@dnv.org within 90 days.

Why Deconstruction?

Deconstruction can divert at least 80% of building materials from the landfill. It provides an opportunity to salvage old-growth lumber from trees that could be over 1,000 years old.

Benefits of Deconstruction

  • Your donated materials may be tax-deductible.
  • Contribute to preserving history and old-growth lumber.
  • Environmental, economic, health, and community benefits.
  • Conserves landfill space.
  • Reduces the impact of extracting raw materials.
  • Creates jobs and economic opportunities.
  • Encourages stringent hazardous materials abatement protocols to ensure worker safety.
  • Creates less neighborhood noise and dust than traditional demolition.
